 Collapsing the Origami Triangle Twist

Push down on the top point of the triangle to teach the paper what to do*
as you push the mountain folds in the chosen direction
*i.e. this push down on the top point of the triangle creates a new mountain fold
allowing the triangle to flatten and lay down - the resulting crease is shown in green in the small picture

Scoring Tissue and Very Thin Materials with Cricut Explore/Dye Cutting Machines

An Origami expert poses the question!
Very thin paper can be successfully scored with a dye cutting machine using the following method.

Using a "De-Solv-It" type product, remove the adhesive from a light grip cutting mat,
as the manufacture's adhesive is quite
aggressive for very thin materials.
Once the adhesive is removed, wash the mat thoroughly and dry well.
Apply to the mat a light coat of Elmer's Repositionable Glue,
a "glue stick" style product.
Lay the tissue paper on the mat.
Cover the tissue with a piece of 20# paper.
Apply masking tape to each corner of the paper to adhere it to the mat.
Using a scoring tool, use a "vinyl" setting for the pressure.
This method successfully scores tissue and other very thin materials,
preventing damage by the scoring tool to a very thin underlay.

Creating Pristine Duo Color Tissue Paper Simply

When the goal is only to hold tissue together for folding
vs. the added thickness or texture opportunities various wet glues can provide,
a repositionable glue stick can offer excellent results.
It glides on easily,
with no bumps, buckles, wrinkles or creases in the resulting duo paper.
The paper remains pristine.
A clean, simple application, with no drying time, the process in completed in seconds.

Cut the papers to the desired finished size.
Apply a light coat of the glue stick to each edge of one piece of tissue paper,
moving from the middle of each edge to the corner.
Aligning and laying the 2nd piece of tissue paper to one edge of the prepared tissue paper,
roll the 2nd piece of tissue paper down
to the opposite edge of the prepared paper.

On first try, should you be "off" somehow,
simply pull back the 2nd piece of tissue paper, and realign.
Voila!!
This process can also be used with foil backed tissue and foil/tissue backed Mylar.

Sculpey (polymer clay) Origami Crane
modeled by KDS
preferred medium is as follows
3 pieces of torn stale white bread – crust removed
3 tablespoons PVC glue
1/2 teaspoon glycerin
Process:
1. Knead with lightly coated glycerin hands. The mixture
will be  extremely sticky for about 3 minutes. The clay will then become very
silky and  move into itself, leaving no residue on the hands.
2. Roll the clay out to a very thin piece. The clay can be rolled so
thinly it is translucent, yet maintains it’s structure.
 3. Cut the clay into the shape needed to fold the Origami model.
There is virtually no shrinkage in the air-dried model.
4. Fold, modifying that process as necessary for working with such a medium.
5. Allow the model to air dry...minimum 24 hours
6.. Finish as desired, for example, paint with acrylic, ink, dye, polyacrylic, etc.

Note: as the viscosity of the clay will be altered, I do not
recommend adding powdered or liquid paint, ink or dye to the initial recipe.
Results using this clay medium are shown below (white crane, silver plane)

Polymer Clay can be used, as shown below (pink crane), however it is very difficult to work the medium into a consistent very thin sheet, hence producing a bulkier, less evenly sized and cured, finished model than may be desired.
Note: polymer clay has a 2% shrink rate.

How to create a perfect taper for strips of paper longer than a "yard stick"

(where one can not easily draw the taper)
Create marks on the paper that can easily be connected for a perfect taper!
Example 1 : using a 60” long 2” strip of cash register tape - mark the halfway point at 1” (see picture below) . Using a "yard stick" draw a line from the 1” mark to the corner of the 2” wide end. Now, place the “yard stick” at the 1” mark made in the center of the paper and draw a line from the 1” mark to the 1/4”  end.  Voila!
The perfect taper and when cut the result will yield 2 strips to make two models.

Example 2: For a strip of cash register tape 2” wide by 90” long – at the 30” point from each end mark width at 1/3 , approximately 21/32” (see picture below).  Using a “yard stick” draw a line to the 2” end. Now place the “yard stick” at the 1/3 mark made at the 30”  point on the paper and draw a line to the next mark and finally place the "yard stick" at the next mark and draw a ling to the 1/4” end.  Another perfect taper and  two strips to fold!!
